I've been pretty supportive so far of the Peter Gabriel song 'Down to Earth' from WALL-E as the best song in a film this year. However, I really like the song from the end of Slumdog Millionaire, 'Jai Ho.' Especially with the awesome dance number that comes with it. Here's a sweet video recently released. Note: There may be minor spoilers if you haven't seen the film.

Sounds Like Terrible Cover
I really like Flyleaf. Solid CD and their acoustic stuff is good. However, browsing YouTube, I saw a video of them covering Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. Oh. My. God. I want five minutes of my life back.
Check it out. But not all of it. I'm scarred for life. Just watch like a minute.

Christina Aguilera Keeps Gettin'... Better?
I love Christina Aguilera.
There. I said it.
Her music is great (for the most part--Stripped is one of my favorite albums ever), she seems to have her life together (compared to lots of other celebrities these days), and hey, she's hot (I think we can all at least agree on this one).
On Nov. 11th a 'greatest hits' album comes out. Here is the track listing, via Target:

The album is titled Keeps Gettin' Better and has a couple new songs, one of which is--you guessed it--Keeps Gettin' Better. You can hear the new single on her MySpace, on youtube, or on your radio 374 times a day.
However, like many artists who claim something about their work, the title is inaccurate. I've listened to the new single a dozen or so times, and I just can't like it. I try to like it. I really do. Back to Basics had some good songs on it, but it looks like Christina has a flop this time around. And by 'flop,' I mean it will still get countless plays because it's still better than most other pop music that comes out these days.
With that said, the album will be available ("exclusively") at Target on the 11th, or through your favorite pirated music source a few days before then.

In the Spirit of Soundtracks....
In light of my post about the Narnia soundtracks, another film with a great musical score is Pan's Labyrinth. Conveniently you can listen to the soundtrack in its entirety on the official movie site.

The Chronic(what!)les of Narnia
I feel it's my duty to tell everyone that the musical scores for both of the Narnia movies are amazing. Even if Narnia isn't your thing (haters), if you like good instrumental stuff, check them out. I've been listening to them constantly for a few years now.

A Thing About 'Best Original Score'
It's really interesting to see how the Oscar goes for Best Original Score. From what I generally gather among avid movie-watchers who really know about music, the movie that has a better score rarely wins. I'm going to use the two most recent winners to prove some points.
My theory is this: Quality of the music is obviously very important, and account for maybe 80-85%, whereas how the score plays into the movie is the remaining 15-20%.
This year the Oscar went to Atonement composer Dario Marianelli. Word around the campfire is that both the Ratatouille and 3:10 to Yuma scores were better. Maybe -- I personally prefer Atonement's. But what makes the Atonement score so much better is how it ties to the movie -- the clacks of the typewriter in tempo, coming and going. The recurring themes and how, just listening to the score, I can imagine the scenes in my head so that I don't have to watch the movie again. The others, not so much.
The previous year Gustavo Santaolalla won for Babel. That time I feel the win was a joke. Here, it enhances the movie's feel, but composition-wise, left much to be desired. Personally, I'm shocked Pan's Labyrinth didn't win, and that's still one of my favorites today. Notes on a Scandal also had a great score, as did The Queen.
There is a very interesting similarity here, though.

So today I ran into one of my friends, and she was wearing a shirt for the band Plain White T's. Yet, oddly, while the shirt was white, it had numerous designs and logos on it. Isn't that a bit oxymoronic? Wouldn't the most logical advertisement for the band be, you know, a plain white t-shirt? But then again, people who aren't familiar with the band wouldn't get it, and even those who are may just think you like white t-shirts. Quite the little dilemma, there.

Sidenote: 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' by Deep Blue Something (the song) owns.
So I got a paper back today and had a pretty good grade. I flipped right to the back to see my grade and where on the rubric I scored high (grammar and style, the other stuff was 'strong'). I did the usual reading of the comments my teacher wrote on the paper, then I got to the back page, which is the feared Works Cited list.
To my surprise, I see no corrections to my MLA citations and a 'Good!' written on the blank space.
Now, for those of you who have... gone to school... you know what a bitch MLA form is. When to use a comma, when a period, when a colon, when to italicize, when to underline, how many spaces after a period (no, it's not always 2), when you need volume numbers, when you don't, when to put all the author's names, when to use 'etc.,' and so on and so forth. For this paper I used 7 sources, and somehow I flawlessly got them all down. I think this was a first (for a scenario in which I had to do it all myself and used more than a couple sources).
I was more pleased with getting the MLA form right than with the numerous good comments I got on my actual paper or the grade itself, which I think is a little funny. I'm thinking about framing it.
What, I'm learning? Blasphemy.

The other day I downloaded 5 CDs of Disney's greatest hits. Overall it made me miss my childhood quite a bit. Anyway, I think I'm going to make a "top Disney movies" list. Putting them in any order would be too hard, but here's some that are so good:

Of course, that's quite a few, but what the hell, I love Disney. I wish they still made 'em like they used to.
